October is the month of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this year, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA) is marketing it with the theme "Securing the Next 250." As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, the campaign frames cybersecurity as part of protecting the country's future. Cyber threats are getting faster and smarter, new and evolving technology like artificial intelligence is accelerating the rate at which hackers can find and exploit weak spots in our software and systems, putting our country and economy at risk.
The encouraging part is that everyone can fight back. CISA points individuals to four core steps for staying safe online and encourages organizations of all sizes to go further — logging activity on their systems, backing up and encrypting data, reporting cyber incidents to CISA, and building an incident response plan they actually use. Those who own or operate critical infrastructure are invited to practice the 3Rs of cybersecurity: reduce vulnerabilities, replace end-of-support devices, and recover quickly to sustain operations. America turns 250 this year; let's secure the next 250 together.
